This morning during church I found a prayer for those who live alone in the Book of Common Prayer:
"Almighty God, whose Son had nowhere to lay his head: Grant that those who live alone may not be lonely in their solitude, but that, following in his steps, they may find fulfillment in loving you and their neighbors; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."
I like so many things about this prayer. I like that it distinguishes between loneliness and solitude, and that it acknowledges that people can find fulfillment in platonic love. And I like that it exists at all, and is in the church book for the fourth largest communion (or group of churches-- sort of like a denomination) in the world.
